A Republic, located in western Africa on the Gulf of Guinea. A developed mining
and petroleum industry are the basis of its economy.
Formerly a colony of GREAT BRITAIN (U.K.) and protectorate, formed on January 1st, 1914
from the combined territories of former protectorates of NORTHERN NIGERIA and
SOUTHERN NIGERIA. In 1922 the British Cameroons (see SOUTHERN CAMEROONS)
were attached to it, and most of its territory conjoined Nigeria in 1961. Proclaimed
its independence on October 1st, 1960 and since 1963 a republic within the
British Commonwealth. In May of 1967, the eastern part of Nigeria proclaimed
unilateral independence as BIAFRA, but only for a short period of time.
First stamps issued in 1914. Several indirect UPU memberships, direct since
July 1961. Annual output about 15.
