A Republic located in southern South America, on the Atlantic Ocean. The most
developed South American country, its economy based on agriculture. Very well
known for its stock breading which is one of the main industries.
Formerly a confederation, including the provinces of BUENOS AIRES, CORDOBA and
CORRIENTES. Since 1862 a Federated Republic.
First stamps were issued in 1858. Several foreign European Post Offices
operated in Argentina. The British and French used their own stamps, while the
Italian used Italian stamps overprinted 'Estero' (see LEVANT, Italian P.O.).
Between 1913-1938 official overprinted stamps were issued by various government
departments, bearing their initials. Direct UPU membership since July 1st, 1880.
Annual output about 65.
In 1891 a single local stamp was issued for Fireland to use on letters to Chile and Argentine.
