Area - 9,372,575 sq.km; Population - 278,058,000; Capital - Washington DC
A Federated Republic in North America, between Canada to the north and Mexico to
the south and between the Pacific to the west and Atlantic to the east. It
consists of 50 federated states, 48 of them in the mainland, Hawaii and Alaska
outside its borders. Each of the states has its own government, with a central
federal government situated in Washington DC, the capital. For approximately
last two centuries, it has been a 'magnet' to the largest immigration movement
in the new era, which led to its becoming the third largest populated country.
The United States, also referred to worldwide as 'America', is the greatest
Power in the twentieth century, the most influential nation and the greatest
space explorer. One of the most highly developed countries technologywise,
leader in aviation, blessed with a large variety of natural resources and highly
developed agriculture, exporting wheat, meats, minerals, machinery, textiles, etc.
The most significant event in recent history of the United States was the Civil
War, which broke out in 1861, when eleven states broke away from the Union and
declared themselves as the CONFEDERATE STATES of America, and ended in 1865 with
their defeat. In 1867 it started acquiring overseas territories, beginning
with Alaska, then in 1898 HAWAII, PUERTO RICO, GUAM, the PHILIPPINES (until
1946) and CUBA (until 1902). In 1899 the eastern part of Samoa was acquired, in
1903 the Panama CANAL ZONE (returned in 1979), and in 1917 the DANISH WEST INDIES
(U.S. Virgin Islands). As a result of the Japanese defeat in World
War II, several more territories were acquired: MARSHALL ISLANDS,
CAROLINE ISLANDS (until 1983 when renamed as MICRONESIA (F.S.M.)), PALAU (until 1986),
MARIANA ISLANDS and the RYUKYU ISLANDS (until 1972). The United States
maintained a Post Office in China (see CHINA, United States P.O.) from 1867 until 1922.
First US stamps issued in 1847. A unique feature of the United States stamps
until recent years, was their irregular perforation, causing asymmetric corners.
UPU membership since July 1st, 1875. Annual output about 120.
