A People's Republic in eastern Asia, the most populated country in the world.
Economy is based on agriculture, manufacturing and mining. China is very well
known for its silk, tea and rice which are also exported.
Formerly an Empire (see CHINA) until 1911, when a Republic was established by
Sun Yat-sen. The Chinese People's Republic came to existence in 1949 under the
leadership of Mao Tse-tung, by defeating the Kumintang (nationalists) and
driving them out of the country. Since 1965 TIBET is an autonomous province
within China. HONG KONG became a Special Administrative Region (SAR)
of China in 1997 and MACAO in 1999.
First stamps issued in 1949. Direct UPU membership since March 1st, 1914.
A unique feature of Chinese stamps is the serial numbers appearing on the lower
part of the stamp, beneath the frame. These numbers specify the issue number,
total number of stamps in set, position of the stamp within the set and total of
stamps issued up to the specific one. Since 1952 year of issue is also
specified. Annual output about 90.
