A Republic in the Middle East, on the eastern shores of the Mediterranean Sea.
Economy mainly based on agriculture and trade.
Formerly part of the Ottoman Empire until 1919 when it was occupied by France.
In 1920 it was mandated by the League of Nations to FRANCE together with SYRIA,
and formed the territory called 'Syria-Greater Lebanon'. In 1927 it became a
Republic with some autonomy and its borders were defined separately from Syria.
In 1941 independence was granted by France.
First stamps were issued in 1924 under the French Mandate. Several indirect UPU
memberships, direct since May 15th, 1946. Annual output about 8.
