A Federal Republic, located in southeastern Europe, one of the five
Balkan States. Economy mainly based on agriculture, manufacturing and mining.
Yugoslavia was proclaimed in 1918, following the collapse of the
Austro-Hungarian Empire in World War I. It comprised the former territories of
BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA which united with CROATIA (HRVATSKA), SLOVENIA,
DALMATIA, MONTENEGRO and the Kingdom of SERBIA.
The new state was first known as the Kingdom of the Serbs, Croats and Slovens,
and in 1929 changed its name to the Kingdom of Yugoslavia.
In the early 1990s, Yugoslavia began to unravel along ethnic lines:
Slovenia, Croatia, and The Former Yugoslav Republic of MACEDONIA all declared
their independence in 1991; Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1992. The remaining
republics of Serbia and Montenegro declared a new 'Federal Republic of
Yugoslavia' in 1992.
First stamps were issued in 1918 and until 1920 each of the Federated
territories had their own issues. In 1920 several stamps were issued for the
territory of CARINTHIA with the overprint 'KGCA', which later on by plebiscite
was conjoined with AUSTRIA.
In 1941 Yugoslavia was occupied by Italian and German forces and stamps were
issued separately for Serbia, Montenegro, Croatia and Slovenia. Between
1943-1944 there were issues for the Yugoslav exile government in London. At the
end of the war the Kingdom was abolished and a Democratic Federal Republic was
established. Besides the regular issues, in the first year federal regional
issues appeared for Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Slovenia, Croatia and for
Montenegro.
In 1923 a single stamp overprinted 'U.R.I' = 'Uprava Ratnih Invalida' means given to the Society for Wounded Invalids.
Indirect UPU membership since July 1875, direct since December 24th, 1921.
Annual output about 50.
