A former Kingdom, one of the Yugoslav Federated Republics, located in the east,
bordering Romania. Formerly a Princedom, autonomous under Turkish protection.
Independent since 1878 and officially proclaimed a Kingdom in 1882. In 1914
attacked by the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The Serbian government then found
refuge on CORFU and established there an exile government, using overprints on
French stamps. In 1918 Serbia conjoined with SLOVENIA,
BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA, CROATIA (HRVATSKA), DALMATIA and MONTENEGRO
to form the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovens, known as YUGOSLAVIA since 1929.
Stamps for Serbia were issued between 1866-1920. For issues of the Austro-Hungarian
occupation forces between 1914-1916 see under AUSTRO-HUNGARIAN MILITARY POST.
During World War II, stamps were issued between 1941-43 for the German occupation forces.
In 1944 regional stamps for Serbia were issued (see under Yugoslavia).
In the early 1990s, Yugoslavia began to unravel along ethnic lines:
Slovenia, Croatia, and The Former Yugoslav Republic of MACEDONIA all declared
their independence in 1991; Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1992. The remaining
republics of Serbia and Montenegro declared a new 'Federal Republic of
Yugoslavia' in 1992.
