An independent island located in the Indian Ocean, east of Madagascar. Economy
based mainly on sugar exporting.
Former Colony of GREAT BRITAIN (U.K.), with the SEYCHELLES as its dependency until 1903.
Autonomous from 1966, declared an independent state on March 12, 1968, member
of the British Commonwealth.
First issued stamps in 1847, were primitively local printed, becoming some of
the most valuable stamps, especially the first two known as the `Red Mauritius`
and the 'Blue Mauritius' (Queen Victoria stamp, face value 1d, 2d). Only 15+12
examples are known to have survived. Indirect UPU membership from April 1st 1877
as a British Colony, direct since August 29th, 1969. Annual output about 20.
