A Republic, located at the southern tip of Africa. Mining (mainly diamonds and
gold) and agriculture are the principal industries, South Africa being the most
developed country in the African continent.
The union was formed on May 31st, 1910, comprising the former British and Boer
colonies of CAPE OF GOOD HOPE (including GRIQUALAND WEST), NATAL (including
NEW REPUBLIC and ZULULAND), ORANGE FREE STATE and TRANSVAAL, and became a
Dominion of GREAT BRITAIN (U.K.). After World War I SOUTH WEST AFRICA (NAMIBIA) mandated
to South Africa by the League of Nations. In 1934 the union achieved a status of
sovereign state within the British Empire. It became a republic in 1961 and in the
same year withdrew from the British Commonwealth. Four regions were given
autonomy and later on independence, as tribal homelands for black Africans during
the years 1975-1981 (TRANSKEI 1975, BOPHUTHATSWANA 1977, VENDA 1979
and CISKEI 1981). The 1990s brought an end to apartheid politically and
ushered in black majority rule.
The four regions reincorporated into the Republic on 27 April 1994.
From 1 June 1994 again a Commonwealth member.
First stamps issued in 1910 as Union of South Africa. Various UPU memberships
since 1892, direct as Republic of South Africa from May 31st, 1961. Between the
years 1926-1951 bilingual stamps were issued in form of 'Se-Tenant' on each
sheet (in English and Afrikaans). Annual output about 60.
