A Republic, located in western Europe, bordering the Atlantic ocean. France is
the largest of the west European nations, one of the most developed countries in
the EEC (European Economic Community) and leading powers. Technological
industry, mining and agriculture are the most important elements in its economy,
very well known for its wine industry.
France was a Republic (the second Republic) from 1848 until 1852 when Louis
Napoleon Bonaparte (nephew of Napoleon I) was proclaimed emperor (as Napoleon
III). He was defeated in 1870 during the Franco-Prussian war, and as a result
France had to give up the territories of ALSACE AND LORRAINE which were annexed
by Germany until World War I. After this war the third Republic came into
existence and held until 1940 (World War II) when France was occupied by the
German army. The territories of ALSACE and LORRAINE were reoccupied. The fourth
Republic was established in 1946 and in 1958 the fifth which is the current one.
In the 19th century France was one of the greatest colonial powers, which
gradually lost its large Empire in Indochina, Algeria, West Africa and Equatorial Africa.
