A Republic, located in western Europe, bordering the Atlantic ocean. France is
the largest of the west European nations, one of the most developed countries in
the EEC (European Economic Community) and leading powers. Technological
industry, mining and agriculture are the most important elements in its economy,
very well known for its wine industry.
France was a Republic (the second Republic) from 1848 until 1852 when Louis
Napoleon Bonaparte (nephew of Napoleon I) was proclaimed emperor (as Napoleon
III). He was defeated in 1870 during the Franco-Prussian war, and as a result
France had to give up the territories of ALSACE AND LORRAINE which were annexed
by Germany until World War I. After this war the third Republic came into
existence and held until 1940 (World War II) when France was occupied by the
German army. The territories of ALSACE and LORRAINE were reoccupied. The fourth
Republic was established in 1946 and in 1958 the fifth which is the current one.
In the 19th century France was one of the greatest colonial powers, which
gradually lost its large Empire in Indochina, Algeria, West Africa and Equatorial Africa.
France is the head state of the French Community which consists of six overseas
departments: FRENCH GUIANA in South America, GUADELOUPE and MARTINIQUE in the
West Indies, MAYOTTE an island formerly part of the Comoros in the Indian Ocean,
REUNION an island also in the Indian Ocean and ST.PIERRE AND MIQUELON islands
off the east coast of Canada. In addition it has numerous small possessions
called overseas territories such as FRENCH POLYNESIA,
FRENCH ANTARCTIC TERRITORY, NEW CALEDONIA, WALLIS AND FUTUNA ISLANDS and many
other small islands. All of the above are represented in the French National Assembly.
France also maintained overseas Post Offices in CHINA, French P.O., CRETE, French P.O.,
FRENCH LEVANT, JERUSALEM, French Consular P., ZANZIBAR, French P.O.,
MOROCCO, French P.O., and TANGIER, French P.O..
France was one of the first countries to issue stamps starting in 1849.
