Area - 9,976,140 sq.km; Population - 31,592,000; Capital - Ottawa
An Independent Dominion, northern part of the North American continent (except
for Alaska). A very highly developed industrial and technological country, one
of the most prosperous nations in the world. Second largest state (area wise).
Formerly consisting of two parts: Upper Canada (under British influence) and
Lower Canada (under French influence), united by the British as the Province of
Canada in 1840. On July 1st, 1867 it became the first Federal Union in the
British Empire comprising of four provinces: Ontario (Upper Canada), Quebec
(Lower Canada), NOVA SCOTIA and NEW BRUNSWICK. Later on several other provinces
joined: Manitoba (in 1870), BRITISH COLUMBIA & VANCOUVER (in 1871),
PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND (in 1873), Saskatchewan and Alberta (in 1905) and
NEWFOUNDLAND (in 1949). The above provinces in capital letters were formerly
also self stamp issuing. Canada is now a self governing dominion within the
British Commonwealth (see GREAT BRITAIN (U.K.)).
First stamps issued in 1851. Direct UPU membership since July 1st 1878. Annual
output about 70.
