An Independent State, group of islands (comprising of two main islands separated
by the Cook strait) in the southwestern Pacific, southeast of Australia.
Its economy is mainly based on livestock, exporting wool, meat and dairy products.
A former colony of GREAT BRITAIN (U.K.) since 1840 and dominion since 1907.
Independent state within the British Commonwealth since 1947. New Zealand administrates
the ROSS DEPENDENCY in Antarctica, as well as PITCAIRN ISLANDS and the
TOKELAU ISLANDS. COOK ISLANDS (including the independent postal
administration of AITUTAKI) and NIUE are internal self governing, while New Zealand is
handling their foreign affairs and their residents are its citizens.
First stamps issued in 1855, the first issues being quite rare. Indirect UPU
membership since October 1st, 1891 under Australia, direct since October 1st,
1907. Annual output about 90.
