Area - 632 sq.km; Population - 4,300,000; Capital - Singapore
A Republic, island off the southern coast of the Malay peninsula. An important
seaport in the Far East and a very large rubber exchange.
Under influence of GREAT BRITAIN (U.K.) since 1819 and later on a crown colony within
the STRAITS SETTLEMENTS until 1957. In 1958 it became an internally self governing
state. In 1963 joined the MALAYSIA federation until 1965 when it withdrew to
become an independent Republic within the British Commonwealth. Stamp issuing
started in 1948. Several indirect UPU memberships, direct since January 8th,
1966. Annual output about 50.
