A Federation, located in the southern part of the Malay peninsula and northern
part of Borneo island in south eastern Asia. Economy based on agriculture,
mining and forestry, exporting rubber, iron, timber, tin, etc. An independent Federation
within the British Commonwealth (see GREAT BRITAIN (U.K.)), came into existence
on September 16th, 1963 when the former MALAYAN FEDERATION (combining JOHORE,
KELANTAN, KEDAH, PERLIS, TRENGGANU, NEGRI SEMBILAN, PAHANG, PERAK, SELANGOR,
PENANG (PULAU PINANG), and MALACCA (MELAKA)) united with the states of SABAH (NORTH BORNEO), SARAWAK and SINGAPORE.
The last one withdrew from the Federation in 1965 to become an
independent republic. Today, each of the 13 states uses its own stamps besides
the Federation stamps. Identical stamps for each separate state a.m. are issued
from time to time and valid in every one of the other Federation states,
differing by name of state and local ruler or arms.
First stamps issued in 1963. Several indirect UPU memberships, direct since
September 1963. Annual output about 60.
