An island in the Indian ocean, close to the southern coast of India. The economy
is mainly based on agriculture, exporting tea, rubber and coconut.
Formerly CEYLON, which on May 22nd, 1972 became the Republic of Sri Lanka,
within the British Commonwealth (see GREAT BRITAIN (U.K.)) and started stamp issuing
under the new name.
In 1978 changed its government ship to Democratic Socialist Republic. Indirect
UPU membership from April 1st, 1877 as a British colony (Ceylon) direct since
July 13th, 1949. Annual output about 40.
