Area - 678,500 sq.km; Capital - Rangoon
Formerly a province of INDIA until 1937 when it came under British administration and started
own stamp issuing. In 1942 occupied by JAPAN and in 1943 the puppet state of Shan
was formed on part of the territory. Stamps in Japanese script were issued,
later on overprinted with Burmese script for the Burmese puppet government.
In 1945 it came under British military rule and in 1946 under civil administration.
An interim government formed in 1947 and on January 4th 1948 it gained its full
independence as Union of Burma, from 1974 a Socialist Republic.
In 1989 renamed as Union of MYANMAR. |
