A Republic located in western Africa, between Guinea and Liberia. Agriculture is
its main economical basis, diamonds and iron mining also being of great importance.
A former colony of GREAT BRITAIN (U.K.) and protectorate. Since April 27th 1961 an
independent state and from April 22nd 1971 a republic within the British Commonwealth.
Before 1869 stamps of Sierra leone were valid also in GAMBIA.
Stamps with unusual shapes and design were issued (for example: maps, fruits, etc).
First stamps issued in 1859. Indirect UPU membership since January 1st 1879 as a
British Colony and direct since January 29th 1962. Annual output about 200.
The high production mainly aimed at the philatelic market, with no postal actual need.
