A Republic located on the west coast of Africa. An agriculture of plantations,
mostly peanuts, upon which economy is based.
Gambia was the first British colony in Africa. Before 1869 stamps of SIERRA LEONE
were valid in Gambia. On February 18th, 1965 The Gambia gained
independence within the British Commonwealth with the Queen of England as
chief of state. It became a republic in April 1970 remaining a member of the
Commonwealth (see GREAT BRITAIN (U.K.)), having its own head of state.
The first stamp of 1869 bearing the head of Queen Victoria is known in the
philatelic world as 'Gambia Cameos' (embossing). Indirect UPU membership from January 1st,
1879 as a British colony, direct from October 9th, 1974. Annual output about 280.
The high production mainly aimed at the philatelic market, with no postal
actual need.
