A Republic, located in east-central Africa at the Equator, agriculture and
livestock being the basis of its economy.
Protectorate of GREAT BRITAIN (U.K.) since 1894, when the local native Kingdom of Buganda
was established and later on (1896), joined by several other territories reached the
present area of the Republic of Uganda. In 1962 became a self-governing state,
and on October 9th 1962 gained complete independence. Uganda is a member of the
British Commonwealth.
First stamps were very primitively produced (typed on a typewriter by a local
missionary) in 1895. Since 1903 Uganda joined the postal administration of
British East Africa and Uganda (see KENYA, UGANDA AND TANZANIA). Indirect UPU
membership from April 1st, 1901 (as a British colony), direct since February
13th, 1964. Annual output about 120.
