A Republic on the northern coast of South America. One of the richest states of
Latin America, exporting large quantities of petroleum and coffee.
Formerly part of New Granada together with COLOMBIA, ECUADOR and PANAMA.
Independent since 1830.
First stamps were issued in 1859. In 1864 stamps were issued by a private mail
carrying company St. Thomas and La Guaira. During a civil war of 1899-1903
local stamps were issued for the territories of Carupano, Guayana, Marino and
Maturin. Between 1925-42 regular stamps were perforated with initials G.N for official use.
Direct UPU membership since January 1st, 1880. Annual output about 100.
