A Republic in South America, on the Pacific Ocean. Economy based on mining,
agriculture and fishing; fish products, sugar and some minerals are exported.
Peru, once part of the ancient Inca Empire, formerly the richest Spanish colony
in South America and its capital Lima the center from which almost the entire
continent was administrated. Declared its independence from Spain in 1821, which
was only recognized in 1879. Large territories of Peru were occupied by Chile
between 1879-1882, including the capital Lima, where stamps of Chile were in
use. This forced various other towns to issue own local stamps. During the
occupation by Chile, the Peruvian government made its seat at Arequipa. Stamps
were also issued in Arequipa during the civil war of 1884-85 by the rebels.
First stamps of Peru issued in 1857 by the Pacific Steam Navigation Co.
Direct UPU membership since April 1st, 1879. Annual output about 40.
