A Republic in South America, comprising half of the continent. Brazil, formerly
the largest Portuguese colony, is the only country in Latin America deriving its
language and culture from PORTUGAL rather than Spain. Its economy is based on
agriculture and mining. Coffee, cocoa, cotton and iron ore are main exports.
Formerly an Empire, until 1889 when a Federated Republic was established.
Between 1903-1907 some territories of the neighboring states of BOLIVIA, ECUADOR
and COLOMBIA were annexed.
Brazil's first stamps were issued in 1843, the third stamp-issuing nation after
Great Britain and Switzerland, and the first in South America. The first issue,
the 'Bull's Eye', is very well known and coveted by philatelists. Direct UPU
membership since July 1st, 1877. Annual output about 75.
