An Independent Republic, archipelago of about 7000 islands in the western
Pacific Ocean. Economy based on agriculture, fishing and tourism.
Formerly a Dominion of SPAIN (ESPANA), until 1899 when it was ceded to the UNITED STATES (U.S.A.)
as a result of the Spanish-American war. In 1935 it was granted certain autonomy
as a commonwealth of the United States. In 1941 it was occupied by JAPAN, until
1945 when recaptured by the United States. On July 4th, 1946 it became an
Independent Republic.
First stamps issued in 1854, under the Spanish Dominion. Several indirect UPU
memberships, direct since January 1st, 1922. Annual output about 120. |
