A People's Democratic Republic in eastern Asia, on the northern part of the
Korean peninsula. Economy based on agriculture and heavy industry.
Formerly part of KOREA, which in 1910 was annexed by Japan. In 1945 it was
occupied by the Soviet Union, until 1948 when a People's Democratic Republic
of Korea was established. The 38th parallel separates it from South Korea (see
KOREA, SOUTH). In 1950 its army invaded the South, an act which started the
Korean War.
First North Korean stamps issued in 1946. Direct UPU membership since January
1st, 1900 as Imperial Korea, direct from 1922 as Chosen and since June 6th 1974
direct as the Korean People Democratic Republic. Annual output about 100.
