An Independent Kingdom in the Himalayan Mountains, north of India. Economy is
entirely based on agriculture.
The state has been independent, though under special protection treaty with
Great Britain and since 1949 with India.
First stamps issued in 1954, for internal mail only. Since 1962 stamp production
largely increased. Direct UPU membership since March 7th, 1969. Prior to that
stamps of INDIA, TIBET and CHINA were in use for outside mail. A well known
feature of Bhutan are 3D stamps. Annual output about 150.
