A Republic, island previously known as Formosa (the beautiful island), southeast
of China. Economy is mainly based on manufacturing and agriculture, exporting
textiles, yarns and in recent years products for the computers market.
A province of China until 1895, when it was ceded to JAPAN. Returned to China
in 1945, following World War II. It was established as Republic of China in
1949, when it became the refuge of the Chinese Nationalists who fled from CHINA.
First stamps issued in 1888 as province of China. Between 1895-1945 stamps of
Japan were in use. In 1945 several stamps were issued for the Japanese
administration. Between 1945-1949 stamps were again issued as province of China
and since 1949 as Republic of China. Annual output about 70.
