A former Republic located in the southwestern corner of the Arabian Peninsula.
Formerly part of the Ottoman Empire, until 1918 when it became independent as a
Kingdom, ruled by an Imam. A revolt which took place in 1962 overthrew the
Kingdom and a Republic was proclaimed. The Imam and his government fled to
Saudi Arabia, and stamp issuing continued simultaneously (see YEMEN, Royalist).
Fighting went on until 1970 when the Republic was recognized by Saudi Arabia.
The SOUTHERN YEMEN and Yemen (YAR) were formally unified as the
Republic of Yemen, see YEMEN in 1990.
First stamps were issued in 1926. Indirect UPU membership from July 1st, 1875
(under Ottoman Empire), direct since January 1st, 1930.
