A Republic in southwestern Asia. Mainly an agricultural state.
Formerly the Kingdom of Kabul and later on Kingdom of Afghanistan, until 1973
when the Republic was established.
First stamps were issued in 1871 for the Kingdom of Kabul, however direct UPU
membership only since April 1st, 1928. Until then stamps of Afghanistan were used
only locally, while for outbound mail stamps of India were required. Between 1990-1996
years of the fundamentalist Islamic Taliban movement,
Afghanistan has no issued stamps. Annual output about 40.
