An Islamic Republic in southwestern Asia, between the Persian Gulf and the
Caspian Sea. Economy mainly based on exporting crude oil. Also well known for
its carpets production.
Formerly Persia, a Monarchy ruled by Shahs. In 1935 the name Iran was adopted.
In 1979 the last Shah was overthrown and an Islamic Republic was established.
In 1915 few stamps were issued under British occupation of the seaport BUSHIRE.
First stamps were issued in 1868. Direct UPU membership since September 1st,
1877. Annual output about 55.
