A Republic in the Near East, western Asia. Economy mainly based on agriculture,
and production of petroleum and crude oil.
Formerly part of the Ottoman Empire, known as 'Mesopotamia', the land between
the Rivers (Tigris and Euphrates). In 1918 it was occupied by British and Indian
forces including the territories of MOSUL and BAGHDAD, and in 1920 mandated to
GREAT BRITAIN (U.K.) by the League of Nations. A monarchy was established in 1926,
which became independent in 1932 with the withdrawal of the British. Following a
revolution in 1958 the monarchy was abolished and a Republic was proclaimed.
First stamps were issued in 1918 under British Occupation. Several indirect UPU
memberships, direct since April 22nd, 1929. Annual output about 30.
