Area - 1,001,449 sq.km; Population - 69,536,000; Capital - Cairo
A Republic in north-eastern Africa. Economy is based on agriculture, exporting
petroleum, cotton, etc.
Formerly part of the Ottoman Empire until 1914 when it became a Protectorate of
GREAT BRITAIN (U.K.). In 1922 an independent Kingdom was established, however British
troops remained stationed in Egypt until early 1950's. In 1952 the Kingdom was
abolished by a coup and in 1953 a Republic was proclaimed. In 1958 a federation
with SYRIA was established as the 'United Arab Republic', from which Syria
withdrew in 1961, however remained the official name for Egypt until 1971. Since
then the official name of state is Arab Republic of Egypt.
Between 1948-1967 stamps were issued for the Gaza strip (see
PALESTINE, Egyptian). First stamps issued as Suzerainty of TURKEY in 1866. Stamps
were also issued in 1869 by the SUEZ CANAL company. Direct UPU membership since
July 1st, 1875. Annual output about 30.
