A Republic in Asia Minor and partly in south-eastern Europe. Developing
agricultural country, exporting cotton, tobacco, etc.
Formerly the great 'Ottoman Empire', which at its peak (in the 17th century)
ruled over territories extending from the gates of Vienna up to the Persian Gulf
as well as parts of Northern Africa. Its decline began in the 19th century, when
the Balkan territories - with Greece in the lead in 1820's - sought assistance
from other Powers in gaining their independence. Gradually all the European
territories under the Ottoman rule were lost, except for eastern part of THRACE
which was divided between Bulgaria, GREECE (HELLAS) and Turkey. The Ottoman Empire
actually ceased to exist in 1922. By that time Mustafa Kemal had already
established a Turkish government at Ankara, reassembled part of the Turkish
defeated army and managed to regain several territories from the Allies (such
as Constantinople). He was the founder of modern Turkey, which in 1923 became a
Republic. For his accomplishments the Turkish people awarded him the title of
'Ataturk' - father of the Turks.
During the Greko-Turkish War stamps were issued for the Turkish forces in Greece
(see THESSALY). Several European Powers with an interest in the Eastern
Mediterranean area, kept Post Offices within the territory of the Ottoman
Empire. See under BRITISH LEVANT, FRENCH LEVANT, LEVANT, Austrian P.O.,

during the period until a Republic was established.
Turkish army invaded the island of Cyprus in 1974 and declared the northern part
of it an independent Republic, in 1983 as TURKISH CYPRUS.
First stamps of the Ottoman Empire were issued in 1863. Direct UPU membership
since July 1st, 1875. Annual output about 30.
