A Republic in north central Europe, formerly a Kingdom. Economy is based on
agriculture and industry, coal and iron are mainly exported.
Poland's history is a very turbulent one, the country actually ceasing to exist
for over one hundred years, being portioned and totally absorbed in 1795 by its
neighbors Prussia, Russia and Austria.
An uprising in 1863 led to the set up of Warsaw General Gubernia (Government),
which became a Russian province. In 1915, during World War I, several German
stamps were issued for this area overprinted 'Russisch-Polen'. Between 1916-1917
stamps were issued for the entire area known as 'General Gouvernement Warschau'.
Poland reappeared on the map of Europe in 1918, at the end of World War I, its
independence being recognized by the Versailles Treaty. Between 1925-1939,
Poland maintained a Post Offices in the Free City of Danzig (see DANZIG, Polish Post),
which is today part of it, also P.O. in LEVANT, Polish P.O., ODESSA, Polish Consular P.
and for POLAND, Military Post. On September 1st, 1939, it was entered by German forces
and again totally occupied. Stamps were then issued for the occupation of GERMANY,
known as 'General Government' stamps. In 1952 a People's Republic was established,
until 1990 when Poland became one of the first east European states to abolish the
communist regime.
First Polish stamp was issued in 1860 under Dominion of RUSSIA, inscription
reading 'ZA LOT KOP 10' marks the charge of 10 kopecks for a letter weighing
1 lot. Indirect UPU membership under Germany, Austria and Russia from July 1st,
1875. Direct since May 1st, 1919. Annual output about 60.
