A Former Federation of the two Czech and Slovakian Republics in central Europe.
Czechoslovakia, formerly within the Austro-Hungarian Empire, was created in 1918
comprising the territories of Slovakia, Bohemia and Moravia, Sudetenland and
part of EASTERN SILESIA which conjoined in 1920. In 1938 the Sudetenland (see
SUDETENLAND (local)) was ceded to Germany by the Munich Conference. Poland and
Hungary also overtook territories - Poland occupied parts of Eastern Silesia and
Hungary the territory of Komarno. In 1939 Germany occupied BOHEMIA AND MORAVIA,
as well as Slovakia which became German protectorates during World War II.
Slovakia was proclaimed an independent Republic (which was actually a puppet
republic). Thus Czechoslovakia ceased to exist, an exile Government being
established in London and exile Czech troops fighting alongside the Allies.
The dual Federated Republic was re-established in 1945 gaining back almost its
entire former territory with the exception of CARPATHO-UKRAINE which was
incorporated into Russia. In 1948 a People's Republic was proclaimed and in
1989 again a Federated Republic. In 1993, the country divided into its two
national components, the CZECH REPUBLIC and SLOVAKIA.
First stamps were issued in 1918. Indirect UPU membership since July 1st, 1875.
Direct from May 18th, 1920. Last stamp issued at the end of 1992.
