A Republic in east central Europe. Economy is based on agriculture and industry.
Iron, machinery, chemicals and steel are exported.
Formerly a Monarchy and part of the Austro- Hungarian Empire under the rule of
the Austrian Emperor. The Empire broke up in 1918, as a result of World War I,
which also caused Hungary to lose the territory of TRANSYLVANIA to ROMANIA and
the territories of BANAT BACSKA and BARANYA were divided between Yugoslavia and
Romania. The area of TEMESVAR was ceded to Romania as well as the area of ARAD
which was first occupied by French forces. DEBRECEN was occupied by Romania in
1919 and later on returned to Hungary. In 1919 an anti-Bolshevist government
operated in the town of SZEGED and stamps were issued in same year. A People's
Republic was later established until 1920, when the Kingdom was restored, but
actually without a king as head of the state. The territory of WESTERN HUNGARY
(also known as Burgenland), was incorporated into AUSTRIA in 1921,
except for the small area of Sopron. During World War II Hungary sided
with Germany and in 1945 was occupied by Russian army, which assisted the local
communists to establish a People's Republic. In 1989 the communist regime was
abolished and today Hungary is a Republic.
First Hungarian stamps were issued in 1871. Direct UPU membership since July
1st, 1875. Annual output about 50.
