Area - 56,542 sq.km; Population - 4,334,000; Capital - Zagreb
Republic, located in southeastern Europe.
Economy mainly based on tourism, chemicals, mining and wood products.
Formerly one of the Yugoslav Federated Republics, located in the northwest of
the country. In 1918 Croatia conjoined with SERBIA, BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA,
SLOVENIA, DALMATIA and MONTENEGRO to form the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and
Slovens and stamps were separately issued until 1920 (see YUGOSLAVIA). During
World War II, stamps were issued for use of the German occupation forces between
1941-1945. In 1945 regional stamps for Croatia were issued (see under
Yugoslavia). The Croatians succeeded in establishing their independence in 1991.
Under UN supervision the last Serb-held enclave in eastern Slavonia KRAJINA
was returned to Croatia in 1998. Since 1991 reissuing stamps, annual output about 45.
