Area - 51,129 sq.km; Population - 3,922,000; Capital - Sarajevo
Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina , located in southeastern Europe.
Economy mainly based on agriculture, wooden furniture, mining and oil refining.
Formerly one of the Yugoslav Federated states, located in the center of the
country. Part of the Ottoman Empire until 1878 when occupied by Austria-Hungary,
annexed by it in 1908. In 1918 Bosnia and Herzegovina conjoined with SLOVENIA,
CROATIA (HRVATSKA), DALMATIA and MONTENEGRO to form the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and
Slovens, known as YUGOSLAVIA since 1929.
Bosnia and Herzegovina's declaration of sovereignty in October 1991,
was followed by a referendum for independence from the former Yugoslavia
in February 1992. Second tier of government comprised of two stamp issuing entities roughly
equal in size: the Bosniak/Croat Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina HERZEG-BOSNIA
and the Bosnian Serb-led Republika Srpska (RS) SRPSKA REPUBLIC.
Separate stamps were issued until 1919 and in 1945 regional stamps (see under Yugoslavia).
All issues in Austrian stamps design. Stamps were issued between 1879-1918 and from 1993.
