Information
Area - 20.7 sq.km
A town and its surroundings on the Adriatic Sea, much disputed area mainly
between Italy and Croatia. Formerly part of Austria, later on of Croatia and
then HUNGARY (MAGYAR). After World War I it was occupied by the Allied Forces of France,
Italy, Great Britain and the United States. In 1919 Italian volunteers overtook
the city together with the islands of ARBE (RAB) and VEGLIA (KRK) within the KVARNER Bay.
In 1919 Fiume was declared a Free State, confirmed by the Rapallo Treaty of
1920. In 1924 it was ceded to ITALY, with the suburb of Susak remaining on
YUGOSLAVIA territory. This suburb was occupied by Italy in 1941, and together
with Fiume was renamed as FIUME AND KUPA ZONE. Stamps for Fiume were issued
between 1918-1924. Today the area belongs to CROATIA (HRVATSKA), known as Rijeka.
