Information
In 1898 CRETE was internationally occupied by GREAT BRITAIN (U.K.), France, Italy and
Russia, as a result of an uprising and a dispute between Greece and Turkey. Each
of these foreign powers maintained a Post Office on the island, for use of its
forces, as well as for the civilians in their area. The area under British
control was Heraklion or Iraklion (Candia). Stamps of the British Post Office
were issued between 1898-1899.
