A Republic located in central Europe. Developed industrial country, economy
based on exporting of yarns, textiles, machinery, timber and steel. Its beautiful
sceneries and resorts are very attractive to tourists.
Formerly a Monarchy including LOMBARDY AND VENETIA which were lost to Italy by
1866. In 1867 conjoined with HUNGARY (MAGYAR) to form the Austro-Hungarian empire, which
became one of the leading European powers. Austria was also one of the powers
who kept foreign Post Offices in the Levant (see LEVANT, Austrian P.O. and
CRETE, Austrian P.O.).
A special Post Service operated along the Danube River and the Black Sea on
ports in Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey, Serbia and Odessa for use of the Austrian
Danube Steamship Company, for which four stamps were issued between 1866-1870.
In 1918, following World War I, the Monarchy seized to exist and a Republic was
established, under the name of German Austria (Deutsch- Osterreich), for which
stamps were issued between 1918-1919. However, following the peace treaty of
Saint Germain (1919), it was renamed Austria. In 1920 stamps were issued for
CARINTHIA, the most southern province of Austria, whose population decided by
plebiscite to be included in Austria, although largely Slovene (see also
YUGOSLAVIA). In 1938 Austria was incorporated into Germany. At the end of World
War II it was divided into four occupation zones - Soviet, British, French and
American - and officially remained under their control until 1955.
Today Vienna hosts one of the U.N. offices (see UNITED NATIONS, Vienna).
First Austrian stamps were issued in 1850. Direct UPU membership since July 1st,
1875. Annual output about 30.
