A Kingdom located in northwestern Europe, bordering Belgium and Germany, also
known as Holland. Highly developed country, its economy mainly based on dairy
farming and exporting of meat products, chemicals, yarns, fabrics, etc.
Since 1948 it is part of the Benelux union. Netherlands was formerly owner of
the colonies of NETHERLANDS ANTILLES (including CURACAO and Aruba), SURINAM and
NETHERLANDS INDIES (today INDONESIA). The Netherlands Antilles are today an
integral part of the Netherlands Kingdom, and ARUBA is holding the status of
overseas member country, with complete domestic autonomy. Since 1934 Netherlands
hosts the International Court of Justice in The Hague, and stamps are issued for its use.
First stamps issued in 1852. Direct UPU membership since July 1st, 1875. Annual
output about 50. |
