A former Dutch Colony, large archipelago stretching from southeast Asia to
Australia, comprising the islands of Java, Sumatra, two thirds of Borneo,
Western New Guinea, half of Timor, Moluccas and numerous small islands. A colony
of NETHERLANDS (HOLLAND) until 1945, one of the most important colonial possessions.
Occupied by Japan during World War II (see JAVA, SUMATRA, JAVA SUMATRA).
Declared its independence immediately after the war, which was recognized only
in 1949. Changed its name to Indonesia in 1948 and since 1950 renamed as the
Republic of Indonesia. Stamp issuing between 1864-1948. For later issues see
