A Republic, consisting of two islands in the Gulf of Guinea, off the west coast
of Africa. Economy based on production of coffee, cocoa and copra.
Formerly a Colony and overseas province of PORTUGAL, which functioned as a
Colony for prisoners and exiles. It gained its independence on July 12th, 1975.
First stamps issued in 1869. Indirect UPU membership from 1877, direct since
August 22nd, 1977. Annual output about 80, production aimed mainly at the
collectors market.
