A group of nine islands in the Atlantic Ocean, west of Portugal. Economy based
on fishing, production of wine, tourism becoming a main factor.
Formerly a Colony of Portugal and now an integral part of it. The group of
islands consists of three parts: ANGRA, HORTA and PONTA DELGADA, each having
their own issues.
Stamps were issued between 1868-1930, when replaced by those of PORTUGAL. Stamp
issuing in the Azores was revived in 1980, with 'Portugal' as additional
heading, being valid also on the mainland. UPU membership as part of Portugal.
