A Republic, located in northeastern Africa, on the Red Sea, also known as
Abyssinia. Economy is mainly based on agriculture.
One of the oldest independent nations and Empires in Africa. In 1936 occupied by
Italian forces and incorporated into ITALIAN EAST AFRICA, its independence
restored in 1942. In 1952 formed a Federation together with ERITREA and in 1962
merged with it totally. The Kingdom was abolished in 1974 and a Republic
proclaimed.
First stamps issued in 1894. Direct UPU membership from 1908 (as Empire),
indirect from 1936 under Italy, and again direct from 1941. Annual output
about 30.
