A Republic in eastern Africa, south of Ethiopia, on the Indian ocean. Economy
based on agriculture and livestock breading.
Former colony of ITALY, incorporated into ITALIAN EAST AFRICA in 1936. Occupied
by British forces in 1941 (see MIDDLE EAST FORCES) and administrated by Great Britain
until 1950, then again administrated by Italy until 1960 in which it joined
with British SOMALILAND PROTECTORATE to create the independent Somali Republic.
Since 1969 Somali Democratic Republic.
In 1991 the northern part broke away from Somalia and formed its own nation
a Republic of SOMALILAND not internationally recognized.
First stamps issued in 1903 with heading 'Benadir' (Italian territory on the
coast of Somaliland). Several indirect UPU memberships, direct since 1959.
Annual output about 30.
