Area - 1,759,540 sq.km; Population - 5,240,000; Capital - Tripoli
A Republic, located on the north central coast of Africa, bordering Egypt and
Tunisia. Crude oil is the main basis for its economy.
From 1912 a colony of ITALY. Between 1942 to 1943 was occupied by British and
French armies. In 1951 an independent Kingdom was proclaimed, incorporating the
Italian colonies of TRIPOLITANIA and CYRENAICA and the French territories of
FEZZAN and GHADAMES. Stamps of these colonies were in use during 1951 with
'Libya' overprinted. Since 1969 a Republic, today known as 'Socialist People's
Libyan Arab Jamahiriya'.
First stamps issued in 1912 as Italian colony. Several indirect UPU memberships,
direct since June 4th, 1952. Annual output about 80.
