A State located in eastern Africa, bordering the Red Sea, between Djibouti and Sudan.
Economy is largely based on subsistence agriculture, with small industrial sector consists
mainly of light industries. Former Colony of ITALY, incorporated into ITALIAN EAST AFRICA
in 1936. Occupied by British forces in 1941 (see MIDDLE EAST FORCES) and administrated
by Great Britain until 1952 in which it joined with ETHIOPIA (ABYSSINIA) to create a federation
and in 1962 merged with it.
Thirty years struggle for independence that ended in 1991 with Eritrean rebels defeating
governmental forces, independence was overwhelmingly approved in a 1993 referendum.
