A group of islands in the southeastern Aegean Sea, including the islands of
RHODES (RODI) and the twelve DODECANESE ISLANDS: CALINO (KALIMNOS),
CARCHI (KHALKI), CASO (KASOS), COO (KOS), LERO (LEROS),
LIPSO (LISSO), NISIRO (NISIROS), PATMO (PATMOS), PISCOPI (TILOS),
SCARPANTO (KARPATHOS), SIMI and STAMPALIA (ASTIPALAIA). These islands
were part of the Ottoman Empire until 1912 when occupied by ITALY, and stayed
under its control until 1943. Stamps were issued between 1912-1940 for use
throughout the entire area, as well as for each island (see separately). Between
1943-1945 (except the island of Rhodes) were occupied by German and then by
British armies (see MIDDLE EAST FORCES). Since 1947 part of GREECE (HELLAS).
