Area - 738 sq.km; Capital - Trieste
Formerly a free territory between Italy and Yugoslavia. At the end of World War
II the town of Trieste and the territory of VENEZIA GIULIA AND ISTRIA were
occupied by foreign armies and two Zones were established: Zone A in 1947 by the
Anglo-American allied forces in the town of Trieste and its surroundings
(223 sq.km); Zone B in 1948 by the Yugoslav army (515 sq.km). In Zone A Italian
overprinted stamps were in use between 1947-1954, when replaced by stamps of
ITALY. In Zone B Yugoslav stamps with overprint, as well as self issued stamps,
were in use between 1948-1954 when replaced by stamps of YUGOSLAVIA.
